SINGULAR VALUE DECOMPOSITION AND MUSIC
Decomposing nursery songs to find note patterns using math!
Singular Value Decomposition and Music: List
For the final project of Linearity 1 (linear algebra/differential equation) in spring 2018, my teammate and I thought it would be interesting to take the concept of singular value decomposition (SVD) and apply it to music, finding patterns in the frequency and ranking of musical notes. We believed that by finding the most common notes and series of notes used in different songs, we will be able to see a correlation in genre based on the patterns in the plots provided by our SVD analysis. This allowed us to explore the uses and application of SVD in a wider context than before.
